We were lucky to have a special 45 minute anniversary show that will be airing for your Thursday Night. Friend of the show and amazing writer Gail Simone put together a very cool show segment for us at C2E2. She came up with a very cool idea of interviewing us about comics, podcasting and much much more. She turned this into a very cool behind the scenes look at the podcast. She also brought in much of her own personal insight into comics and her own history with the medium. We are thrilled to share this with you.
Hi there Raging Bulleteers, and welcome back to a new edition of JokerFish.
“What’s JokerFish?” I hear you ask. I don’t blame you. Even if you’ve been around these parts for a while you may not remember what JokerFish was. I started this little blog about a year ago when I won a box of comics from DC colorist and friend of the show David Baron. My original intention was to review every book in the box, all dated about November ’09. Well… I reviewed about four books. I was really looking forward to taking a literary stroll across the DC universe, as I was following most of the books at the time, and I was keen to dip a toe into those titles that I’d neglected.
“Bwahaha! So you like to make plans, do you?” laughed Fate (the metaphorical kind, not the one with the PhD and the shiny helmet), as life proceeded to jump up and down all over my intentions. Without giving you a complete dissertation on the Lantern Savage Chronicles, I can tell you that basically my girlfriend moved to New Zealand from Las Vegas last November to live with me, and we’ve since been quite busy with the working and the living together and the blah blah blah. So now you know why there hasn’t been a JokerFish entry on this site since, oh, June 2009, whether that interests you in the slightest or not. Apologies to Sean and Jim and the three other people who were reading!
Episode 244: Comics, Comics, Comics! This episode is all about comics as we chat Brightest Day 19, Superman 708 (with a quick chat on Smallville possibly having Connor), Flash 9, Birds of Prey 9, Justice League Generation Lost 19, T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents 4, and some commentary on some recently announce comic cancellations.
Note: We also have a shout out to Whitney Matheson’s cool article on Comic Podcasts and friend of the show Darrell Taylor sends us a voicemail.
The source blog just posted a cool teaser of the upcoming date between Catman and Huntress. If you are a listener of our podcast over the last 5 years, you know about my love for the Birds of Prey. This is a team book that has consistently showcased strong character development and real human emotional drama. It also has had some of my favorite fight scenes within a comic.
Throughout the years, this book has had some amazing art teams that have really made this consistently an A list title. The writing of Gail Simone remains whitty, exciting, wicked and just plain smart. The series is filled with twists and turns where you start to think it is heading in one direction and it takes a sharp turn and throws you for a loop. For me, half the fun of the series is trying to figure out the various clues and teases laid throughout this web because I actually care about these characters.
If you haven’t checked out the adventures of Oracle, Black Canary, Huntress, Lady Blackhawk and the rest of the BOP crew, do yourself a favor. While is is a book set in the Bat Universe, it is very contained and offers something for everyone. This is superhero storytelling at it’s best. Highest possible recommendation.
Episode 243: We chat about the Smallville episode “Collateral” and “Beacon” from Season 10. Next, we look at some recent DC news and shout out Weird Worlds #2, the Hero Initiative and CBLDF. Finally, we look at Batman and Robin 20, Secret Six 30 and Titans 32.
Note: We also announce the 3 winners from the Sensei Super Snuggie Caption Contest. All entries will be posted on the site this week.
Episode 240: Jim Califiore joins us to discuss his most recent work on Secret Six. We also look through his past work on Aquaman, Exiles, Gotham Underground, Faction Paradox and more. He was a fantastic guest. We hope you enjoy this show as much as we did recording it.
Episode 236: DC Universe Online, Secret Six, Birds of Prey, Superman, Supergirl and so much more. On this episode, we kick off by chatting about the DC Universe Online game. Sean’s had a few hours with a couple of different character builds and shares initial impressions.
We also chat about a variety of comics: Supergirl 59, Superman 705 and 706, Secret Six 28, Birds of Prey 6 and 7, and Justice League of America 51. We also have a great listener voicemail to share.
NOTE: Listen to the show opening for special announcements about C2E2 and our 5th anniversary.
