JokerFish #03: Superpants And Batface

I was listening to Episode 205, in which Sean and Jim had a lengthy discussion (Raging Bullets? Lengthy? Never!) about the upcoming limited issue, company-wide, epic crossover crisis event – Last Action Of The Supermen In The New Krypton War. Superman-related discussions on Raging Bullets are always interesting to me because I don’t pick up any Super books.

Okay, maybe that’s an exaggeration. I’ve been picking up Power Girl and Adventure Comics which are in the Super Family, but you won’t find any Man, Girl or Action in my comics pile. Nothing against the Boy In Blue – it’s not that I don’t like him, it’s just that I don’t like him as much as I like all these other great books I’m picking up. Some readers are Bat-People, and some are Super-People – I’m a Bat-Guy. It might have something to do with growing up in the late 80s and 90s with the Batman movies and shows, just as growing up in the 70s and early 80s must have influenced a lot of Superman fans. Even if you like both, I think even Sean and Jim could tell you whether they’d ultimately root for Bruce or Clark in a fight (though I’d argue that in a Batman vs. Superman battle situation, the smart choice for an onlooker is “to run like hell”).

Paul Cornell on Action Comics and why this could be great.

http://dcu.blog.dccomics.com/2010/04/12/paul-cornell-steps-in-as-new-action-comics-writer/

Paul Cornell on Action. Wow, I did not see that coming. I’ve mentioned on the show for quite some time that besides my love for comics, I am a huge Dr. Who fan. Paul is the creator of Bernice Summerfield who was first a companion to Dr. Who in the Virgin New Adventures novels. These books were just fantastic and gave fans Dr. Who that was compelling when there was no series to follow. Paul’s growth as a novelist throughout that series was so fun to follow. His work at Marvel has been pretty darn good, with Wisdom being a favorite of mine.

Now I get the chance to see him take on Superman.  He was one of a series of creative writers who pushed the envelope of Dr. Who in novels and I look forward to see him play around with Clark’s world. I think the key to his Dr. Who books was that he really understood the core values of the character. As comic fans, we want a writer who knows that is an important step to keeping us on board.   I really think this could wind up being a great run.

Pete Woods on Action Comics

http://dcu.blog.dccomics.com/2010/03/11/new-action-art-team-in-june-woods-on-interiors-finch-on-covers/

I’ve been very curious to see who will be involved in the Superman titles, as I have been enjoying them greatly. I am thrilled Pete Woods is going to be on Action as the artist. I’ve liked his take on Clark’s world since the breathtaking Up,Up, and Away arc from OYL.  The past year has made me very Superman happy and I am looking forward to the new teams taking that even farther.

Geoff Johns talks the Flash on the Source and a quick shout out to Last Stand of New Krypton

http://dcu.blog.dccomics.com/2010/03/05/source-special-geoff-johns-talks-the-flash-part-2/

I’ve shared earlier this week that I am drooling for a new Flash series. If you don’t read the Source regularly, you definitely need to be checking it out for great two part interviews such as this one with Geoff Johns. Plus you get to look at more of that great preview art.

As an additional note, I am hoping any Superman fans out there picked up this week’s Adventure Comics. There are some great moments explaining much of what has been going on with the Legion would have been in our time for the past couple of years.  It’s cool that this is something we’ve seen since the Meltzer JLA run. There is a greater sense of long term infiltration because they knew what was coming. I feel like I have been a part of their journey due to the sense of time passage. I am curious to see if the Legion’s involvement will be enough to completely hold off Brainiac and the plans of General Lane.
